Almost every person new to model railroading faces the same question when starting out. What is the difference between model train scale and gauge? And, why does it matter if I know? Before you go any further with this hobby, let’s answer these questions right away. You’ll be glad we did as it will save you from making the same mistake other beginners do.
Scale is exactly as its name implies. The model you are running or building is just a “scaled-down” replica of the real-life version. The different letters assigned to the scales such as O, HO, and N reflect the different ratios when compared to the life-size version.
Gauge, on the other hand, measures the width between the two rails on a model or real railroad track. It is common for beginners to use the terms gauge and scale interchangeably, but scale and gauge are quite different.

The best way to get ideas on how to develop model train layouts is by visiting the local model train shows. These events are usually hosted and organized by local railway clubs and they offer the best chance to share experiences with other exhibitors and enthusiasts. A Hobbyist Guide For N Scale Model Trains

If the space your planning on using for your model train layout is limited, choosing N scale model trains would be a highly recommended choice. This scale is one of the smallest and most delicate of all the scales, and at the same time offers some advantages that the other scales don’t. The obvious benefit is that it size resolves the problem of space.
Although the N scale is the smallest of the four scales, this can actually work to your advantage. If the space that you have available is small, this will limit your ability to showcase your trains, and subsequently trying to do this doesn’t have any sensibility to it at all.
Because of it’s size, the N scale will allow you to include a greater amount of track into the tiny space your working with, and thus, allow you to create a fuller presentation for your layout without omitting any of it’s important elements.

Keep Your Train on Track with the Correct Model Train Track

All trains must have a track to run on. Therefore; it is very important that when you build a model train track layout that you use the right track for the right job. If you are modeling in the steam era, you will need a turn table or a Y track to turn your locomotive around. Diesel Electric locomotive can run in any direction. When it comes to the radius of the curves is all comes down to the gauge you are modeling.
When modeling in N gauge track, the main line curves should have at least a radius of 11.25″. The larger the radius the better the locomotives will negotiate the turns, especially at full speed. If the curves are too tight the locomotive could bind or even derail.
Now let’s look at HO scale train track. If you are modeling in steam all 4-8-4 engines need at least a 22″ radius. Also the 2-8-4 and 2-10-4′s need at least 22″ radius. The 2-8-0s, 2-6-2s, 0-6-0s, and 4-4-0s locomotives must have a minimum radius of 18″. Most of the diesel electric locomotives in HO gauge must have at least a radius of 18″, except for the EMD DDX40AX must have at least a 22″ radius. Also, most switchers in HO gauge can negotiate a 15″ radius curve.

Don't Let Model Train Sets Be a Limit On Your Dreams

When I was a child and my father would take me to the toy store, I remember scanning the shelves, always looking for the model train sets as they completely fascinated me. There was just something about the look of the locomotives that I found entrancing. Then one day, I was lucky enough to get a model railway set all of my own. As you can imagine, as a young boy, this was the most amazing day ever! I still have it packed away in the attic somewhere I think.
However, even at that age, I found that it wasn’t long before I grew tired of that railroad set. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I got bored of model railway trains completely. In fact, quite the opposite had happened. The problem was that I had just outgrown driving my model locomotive round and round in circles. I was able to get a few additional for my set, which gave it a bit of extra life, but it wasn’t long before I was craving something more.

The first thing is that if you are upgrading because you are expanding you layout, how big do you intend to go?
